This page collects the questions that don’t fit neatly into a compound page or a how-to guide, mostly around legality, safety, and sourcing. As with everything else on this site, none of this is medical or legal advice, and it isn’t a substitute for guidance specific to where you live and what you’re doing.

It depends entirely on the specific compound and where you live. A small number of peptides discussed on this site are FDA-approved pharmaceutical products available by prescription (tesamorelin and the active compounds behind semaglutide and tirzepatide, for example). Most others exist in a research-chemical gray area: not explicitly illegal to possess in many places, but not approved for human consumption either, and sold “for research purposes only.” Laws vary by country and by state, and they change. The FDA compounding vote covered on this site’s blog is a recent example of that status shifting for several compounds. Check current regulations for your specific location rather than assuming.

Do I need a prescription?

For the handful of FDA-approved products, yes, through a licensed prescriber. For compounds sold as research chemicals, there’s typically no prescription involved at all, which is part of what makes sourcing and quality control the buyer’s responsibility rather than a pharmacy’s.

Is PepLytics affiliated with any vendor?

No. This site doesn’t sell peptides, and doesn’t have a financial relationship with any vendor. The PepLytics app is a private, on-device tracking tool: it doesn’t source, recommend, or sell compounds either.

Safety & Sourcing

How do I know a peptide is actually what the label says?

You generally can’t, without independent third-party testing (a Certificate of Analysis, or COA, from a lab not affiliated with the seller). Research-chemical vendors vary enormously in quality, and purity, concentration, and even the identity of what’s in a vial aren’t guaranteed the way they would be with a pharmacy-dispensed product. A COA from an independent lab is the closest thing to verification that exists in this space, and its absence is a legitimate reason for caution.

Is it safe?

That depends on the specific compound, its source, dose, and your own health situation: a general FAQ can’t responsibly answer that for you. What’s true across the board: injecting anything introduces some risk (infection, irritation, an adverse reaction), and that risk is higher with an unregulated substance from an unverified source than with a pharmaceutical product. Basic precautions (sterile technique, single-use needles, verified sourcing, starting at a conservative dose) reduce but don’t eliminate that risk.

What are basic safety practices I should follow?

At minimum: use a new, sterile needle for every injection, never share vials or needles, swab injection sites and vial stoppers with alcohol before use, dispose of used needles in a proper sharps container rather than regular trash, and store compounds according to the guidance in the dosing guide. If you notice unusual swelling, redness that spreads, fever, or any other concerning reaction, that’s a reason to stop and seek medical attention, not something to work through.

Can I travel with peptides?

This varies by country, by mode of transport, and by the specific compound, and it’s genuinely easy to run into legal trouble here even when you didn’t mean to. If you’re traveling with any peptide, research the specific rules for your origin, destination, and any layover countries before you go. Don’t assume that because something is available to you at home, moving it across a border is treated the same way.
